I started my career in art as a wildlife artist with a special focus on birds. My interest in birds went hand in glove with my interest in drawing. On occasion I revisit this early motivation for artistic expression. In this case, one of my most recent paintings, a Pacific Slope Flycatcher. A pair of these birds nested in our barn and were so fun to sketch as one or the other perched on a sycamore tree near the barn, shifting their parental duties from catching insects to feeding their young. The seemed to focus on specific insects for a time, then as that hatch faded, would introduce a new species into their diets. I have learned so much about the world observing nature. Birds in particular have been great teachers regarding the world around me.
